Walk Description:
This walk combines aspects of Marsden’s industrial heritage, the impressive reservoir engineering of the beautiful Wessenden valley and open moorland. Thanks to the National Trust warden who led the walk for us.  Take the small road alongside the Riverhead pub in the centre of Marsden. Walk under the road bridge and up Fall Lane to the small roundabout. Follow Binn Road then Wessenden Road to the obvious track alongside Butterley Reservoir.  An interesting alternative at the foot of Binn Road is to pass through the mill complex (footpath marked on map; part of the Kirklees Way) to a lung-busting ascent up a flight of steps.)  Follow the reservoir track and leave it at the path indicated for the Pennine Way. A second lung busting ascent leads onwards to Swellands Reservoir. Cross the dam and follow a moorland path northwards to meet Old Mount Road which is followed back to Marsden.
