Walk Description: From the church in Upper Bradfield near the pub, take the path through the graveyard; at its end turn left and descend to the road. Follow it round the reservoir until after a house named Smallfield a path turns off to the left. A few metres along this, a small path branches right uphill. Follow this with ever improving views to a road. Cross over and continue north west over Cowell Flat to arrive at a road junction where the enigmatic Bar Dyke (1) crosses. Go through the gate opposite, down the track for about 150m then turn right into the area known as the Canyards Hills (2).  Now for some tricky route finding: following a small path running roughly ESE among the hillocks you should hopefully pass above a small pool to emerge on the open moor. Using small paths cross to the road junction of Penistone Road and Load Field Road and congratulate yourself on your orienteering skills.  Continue along Penistone Road, cross a stile on the right opposite woods and follow the open grassland (wonderful open views) to the stile at the top corner of Rocher Wood. Take the path above the woods then a descending path above the stream; through a gate on the left, the path returns you to the churchyard and the start of the walk.
Public Transport:
Bus 25A from Holmfirth to Penistone every hour, then 23 to Stocksbridge and finally the 57A to Sheffield getting off at Haggstones Road with a short 5 mins walk to the Old Horns Inn. Journey time 2.5 hours. Check bus times.
Other comments and points of interest: The walk takes in the mysterious Bar Dyke (1) , an earthwork of uncertain age (Bronze Age? Iron Age?) and the Canyards Hills (2), a complex landslip and an Area of Special Scientific Interest. Also, close to the start/end of the route, is a Norman bailey (3).  This route is best taken clockwise. In the last quarter of the walk alternative paths take you either along the top of Rocher Wood, through the wood itself via a stile half way down the descent towards Rocher Head or along the path towards Bowsen as shown on the map.
