Walk Description: From the Waggon & Horses pub, head west along the A616 for around 120 m, then turn left down the signed footpath to the footbridge over the Little Don River. Cross and turn right onto the Barnsley Boundary Walk, following the moorland track west with the A628 snow road parallel to your right and wide views across the Langsett watershed (1). Keep ahead across open ground, skirting the top of Long Moor Clough before continuing to the high point near 461 m, passing old boundary stones and the remains of grouse-shooting butts near the ridge (2). At Fiddlers Green turn right (NW) and descend on the clear track towards Windleden Reservoirs (3), the full surface of which appears below as you drop into its catchment. Continue to the outflow bridge, cross, and turn right on the bridleway towards Dunford Bridge, soon reaching the former Woodhead railway line where you join the Trans Pennine Trail (4). Turn right (east) and follow the level engineered cutting for approximately 2.5 km, passing fragments of old sidings and spoil mounds linked to the former industrial railway. Near Carlecotes take the signed path on the right, climbing south-east towards Soughley and on to the turbines of Crow Edge Wind Farm. Continue to the minor road, turn left to descend to the A616 at Crow Edge, then turn right along the verge for roughly 250 m before leaving on the signed footpath south across Thurstone Moors, crossing Wogden Clough and gaining views over the upper moor systems. Continue towards Townhead, then rejoin the Barnsley Boundary Walk, turning right to follow it west back to the footbridge over the Little Don and up to the Waggon & Horses pub.

(2) Boundary Stones & Shooting Butts – Markers from 19th-century estate divisions and traditional grouse-moor management.
(3) Upper and Lower Windleden Reservoirs – remote upland reservoirs with steep feeder cloughs and important blanket bog habitat. Built on a tributary of the River Don about 1890.
(4) Trans Pennine Trail (Woodhead Route) – now a walking route, it follows the bed of the former Manchester–Sheffield railway, opened 1845, closed 1981.
